Abstract

|
We checked the Bone Mineral Density(BMD, L2-L4) by DEXA in 473 postpartum women.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) Average BMD was 1.154gm/§².
2) BMA according to age was 1.122gm/§², the range half of twenties, 1.159gm/§² in later half of twenties, 1.197gm/§² in early half of thirties, 1.133gm/§² in later half of thirties. So BMD was highest in earlier half of thirties.
3) BMD according to diseases was 1.114gm/§² in tuberculosis, 1.170gm/§² to toxemia, 1.185gm/§² in Diabetes Mellitus, 1.164gm/§² in Hepatitis & Carrier, 1.147gm/§² in Hyperthyroidism.
BMD was lower in Pulm Tbc (including Inactive) compared to Non-pulm Tbc. It was significant statistically.(P<0.001)
BMD in Active pulm Tbc(1.074gm/§²) was lower compared to Inactive pulm Tbc(1.140gm/§²). It was significant statistically(P<0.001).
5) incidence of osteoporosis(BMD below 1.0gm/§²) was 10.1% (48/473 cases) generally, 23.2%(13/56) in active Pulm Tbc, 22.2%(2/9) in Hyperthyroidism, 10.8%(4/37) in Diabetes mellitus.
With the above results, we conclude;
It is useful to check the BMD in postpartum women with medical problem especially Pulm tuberculosis, Hyperthtyroidism etc, to detect osteoporosis for prevention & treatment.
